It was a hot summer afternoon in Barcelona; our 1800s apartment in Old Town only has air-conditioning in one room, and I had already spent too many days in a row at my desk, locked up tight with that bit of cool air.
Summer in Barcelona City (especially in the center where we live) is jam-packed full of tourists, while almost all locals escape the city for the cooler air of the surrounding mountains. This year we decided to stay put, but there were days when the heat became too much. What ended up saving us this August in Barcelona was the air-conditioned museums and amazing exhibitions on offer!
We walked (very slowly, and in the shade) through the Gothic Quarter, toward the Port of Barcelona - on a mission to see an Art Nouveau exhibition by graphic designer (and all-around incredible artist) Alphonse Mucha.
While Mucha is probably most well-known for his elaborate nouveau ladies (see video above), his typography and advertisement styles made him the most sought-after graphic designer of early 1900s Paris.
Stay tuned toward the end of the video for a few of my patterns inspired by the exhibition- and if you're in Barcelona, the show is on at Palau Martorell through early October 2023 and I highly recommend a visit!
