My surface design collections are inspired by a life of wandering: 36 countries (and counting), each one leaving its own mark on my imagination.

At the heart of my work is a devotion to artistry and detail — of slowing down, learning traditional techniques, and weaving them into contemporary, narrative-rich designs. From etching and stained glass to mosaics, linocut, and Chinese calligraphy, each medium I study deepens my sense of connection to place, story, and detail.

Inspired by Victorian-era floriography (sending bouquets with hidden meanings to friends, lovers, enemies... the 1800s version of emoji-only text messages) I created this floral-framed portrait with a hopeful message: blue Larkspur for an open heart, yellow Freesia for trust and friendship, and bright Birds of Paradise to celebrate achievements and milestones. It's been an insanely busy end to the year, and I haven't had time to join in on any Christmas drawing challenges or festive creative projects - but I did get a chance to get in the spirit with the new Holiday Watercolor class on @skillshare by @artbysandramejia - I loved being able to do quick 5 minute lessons with satisfying outcomes while my toddler napped, and picking up some new tricks in Procreate along the way. Took my @bookinaboxeu x @wanderingmoda picnic blanket out for some beach sun - it was a great waterproof barrier against the damp sand; kept my clothes clean and it dusted off and folded up into a such a handy lightweight package! This blanket has a permanent place on my outdoor adventures, now ☀️

When @bookinaboxeu asked me to design a pattern for a picnic blanket inspired by their November book (Servant of Earth by @mssarahhawley ) I was thrilled! We added an extra layer of intrigue to fit the theme, by using only toxic flowers to create the pattern: Deadly Nightshade, Wolfsbane, Castor Bean, Hellebore, and Golden Chain Tree.
What made this project extra fun was getting to follow along with the reading plan... opening a different gift from the box that corresponded with different stages of the story.

Amsterdam... Van Gogh Museum. Studying Art for my Bachelor's and Master's degrees, I've been to a lot of museums, and have studied Van Gogh but never been particularly excited about him. I'm SO GLAD we went to his museum in Amsterdam, because seeing his work up close and learning more about his creative process and family life was such an amazing way to spend a rainy afternoon. The museum did a great job of putting his work into context, and getting up-close with his work really did make me appreciate how he developed his style. Scroll to see a really amazing waste-free way that he tested color combinations ("Van Gogh's balls of wool") and a few standout pieces for me... mostly not the famous ones. I loved his Japan paintings inspired by Ukiyo-e prints, and the paintings that used color and brush strokes boldly. Amsterdam, thanks for changing my mind on Van Gogh! 🙏 I'm feeling inspired and can't wait to create new art and patterns based on my time here 🌷

Amsterdam... I was so excited to walk the city, and I thought I knew what to expect: the gingerbread-houses all sandwiched together along the canals. But what I didn't expect was all the mosaics, ceramics, decorative glass, and Art Nouveau touches tucked away! Walking around at night was especially fun, peeking into lit-up entryways and spotting details that would be missed in the daytime.

Amsterdam... I wasn't expecting anything exciting from Dutch food (potatoes, sausages, and cabbage... right?) so @chengyyamy and I booked a food tour with a local guide and spend a morning learning about the city and it's history through the lens of food. We ate freshly-made stroopwafels filled with caramel-y syrup... taste-tested cheeses at a hole-in-the-wall shop, had coffees with apple pie (I got to eat Amy's piece because she hates cinnamon 😁), french fries with peanut butter sambal sauce, and the biggest, pleasant-est surprise of all was the pickled herring... it was DELICIOUS! Fresh fish from the North Sea, cured then dipped in fresh onion - chased by pickles. It tasted like the ocean, and not like fish-funk... and if I hadn't been on a food tour with a local guide, I never would have tried it. It's lucky I'm "eating for two" at the moment, because... it was food-coma land by the end of the day ☺️

Goedendag from Amsterdam! 🌷 I came here once for work about 10 years ago, but they kept us in meetings in the hotel all day, and at night made us all go to the same restaurant next door, and marched us straight back to the hotel after (I guess they knew it was a risky place to let a bunch of recruiters run free with the company credit cards 😉!) - but when I had the chance to go explore it again, it really blew me away. Even more fun to be able to explore the city with a dear friend from Hong Kong @chengyyamy ❤️ While I knew I'd love walking the canals and seeing all the beautiful buildings, I was also so surprised at how chilled-out, calm, and safe it felt. The food was amazing (more on that in another post), there were so many cool independent art+design shops, and there were some fantastic Art Nouveau, ceramics, glass, and mosaics sprinkled around everywhere (more on that in another post, too) - it's felt amazing to be out exploring again; I can't wait to create some new Amsterdam-inspired artwork!

After house-hunting for over a year and a half, living in a (beautiful, but temporary) little apartment... we finally found our paradise and I'm setting up my studio! The summer I lived in Cameroon, the roadside stalls overflowing with fabrics caught my eye at every turn. I was 13 and only had enough in my piggy bank to buy ONE nice dress - and I knew I had to make it count! Looking back, I have no idea how I managed to narrow it down to only one embroidered gown in shades of purple and blue... but I still have that dress now!
For the Africa set of #30FlowersInMyStyle2024 I wanted to create a series of bold, detailed designs inspired by wax print techniques used around the continent. While African textiles are loved for their vibrant color palettes, I felt that monochrome kept the focus on the details and reductive print technique used to create this series.

📚 Book Club: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland📚 A few weeks ago, I snagged the Hand Lettering for Surface Designers class from @sketchdesignrepeat (it's SO methodical and full of industry standard advice!): the new @jehane_ltd theme was the perfect opportunity to put what I'm learning into action. I loved playing with the concepts of reality vs. dreams; boredom while surrounded by incredible things. I had a ton of fun creating the Dali caterpillar, and filling in so many tiny fantasy creatures amidst the dreamy roses... 🌹🦋
