Moving to Barcelona from Hong Kong in the middle of the pandemic, taking daily walks was the best way to acclimate to my new surroundings and start getting a feel for my new home.
I'm obsessed with architecture, and had been wanting to make a design based around one of my favorite buildings in Barcelona:
The historical damask style became the perfect opportunity to explore this architecture in pattern form, while also paying homage to the gorgeous plant-life on the balconies and terraces of Barcelona City.
I took a fantastic class on Skillshare, a deep-dive into the history of the Damask style, and also how to make your own. If you want to learn to make your own damasks, I highly recommend this class.
Here's a peek at my process, from drawing to Adobe Illustrator:
Once the drawings were vectorized and cleaned up, I could use color inspirations from the Eixample neighbourhood of Barcelona, where this building is based- it was hard to stick to only four colors for the whole collection, but I love how it turned out.
The last thing to share with you is a "before and after" video. I actually made this as a mini-collection of three patterns last year, then this year I revisited it and wanted to expand it into a full collection. As part of that collection creation process, I used everything I've learned in the last year to edit the balance, details, and fit of the three original pieces I started with last year. Check out the comparisons!
What a difference a year makes, hey? Thanks for joining me on this deep-dive into Barcelona Damask, which is currently available for licensing and will hopefully be out in the world on fabric, wallpaper, and home goods very soon!
